Chiro Care for You and Your Kids

November is Dr. Casey’s Due Date Month! I have checked both of my boys right away after they were born when everything has calmed down and everyone is doing good.

Signs that your baby could benefit from a specific Pediatric Chiropractor:

  • Reflux
  • Colic
  • Tummy Issues — digestion, constipation, excessive spitting up,
  • Sleeping Issues — Babies wake up a lot but if you feel that its more than normal or they do not want to be laid down flat is a sign to come in.
  • Ear Infections
  • Breastfeeding issues
    • Baby can’t turn head and will favor a side, abnormal sucking pattern, tongue and lip ties,  etc.
  • Fever
  • Torticollis
  • Flat spot on their head

Dr. Casey is very passionate about helping moms who may be having troubles getting pregnant, prenatal care, post natal care and pediatric care! She took extra training with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association to be able to help moms and their little ones.

“I love helping moms have awesome and enjoyable pregnancies and providing their babies with their best health potential as early on as we can.”

Why Infants Need Chiropractic Care

It is common to get strange looks from people when I talk to about taking infants to the chiropractor. I know what is going through their heads: Is it safe? Babies don’t have back pain. Do babies get adjusted the same way I do? These are legitimate concerns for any parent, but to answer them I will begin with the most important question: Why?

Being born is tough work. There are a lot of pressures and forces being exerted onto your baby during his/her journey into the world. Most people are surprised to find out that the first stress placed on a child’s neck and back is during the birthing process. An estimated 60-90 lbs. of force is used on an infant’s neck during “normal” delivery.

Do you think this could cause damage to your child’s spine and nervous system?

Fact: The nervous system controls every cell and organ (heart, lungs, brain, stomach) in your body.

Have you watched your child play outside or with their friends? They run, jump, fall, roll, and tackle every day. Many adults that come to a chiropractor’s office show evidence of childhood injuries that can be the cause for their pain today. Do you think it is too early to teach your kids to take care of their teeth? When do you think it is a good time to have your child’s spine checked for serious signs of spinal imbalances or misalignments?

Fortunately, Chiropractic has had many positive results in children with common childhood problems. Problems like headache, scoliosis, asthma, colic, ear infections, asthma, and even some cases of behavioral problems respond well with chiropractic care. In fact, a recent study showed that children under chiropractic care suffered fewer ear infections than those whose parent took them to medical care alone.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe for children?

Absolutely! Because a child’s skeletal system is still developing, only light pressure is needed to adjust a child’s spine. The few minutes you invest in your child’s spinal checkup may save them before needless suffering now and in the future.

Birth trauma:

Birth, in its many different forms, can be quite traumatic. While each birth is unique, there is always a chance that the baby suffers some sort of strain, due to a variety of reasons. Even the most natural births can result in trauma that goes undetected.

What can cause birth trauma?

Very short labor, very long labor, failure of the cervix to dilate, use of Pitocin to strengthen/induce uterine contractions, use of forceps or vacuum extraction, or cord around baby’s neck.

Trauma that is left uncorrected, continues to impact a baby’s spinal growth and development, reducing the healthy function of his/her nervous system later in life, which could easily have been prevented.

What can nerve dysfunction from birth trauma lead to?

Respiratory dysfunction, digestive disorders, irritability, difficulty nursing (impaired sucking, swallowing or head positions), balance issues, sleeping difficulty, and delayed developmental milestones.

Chiropractic maximizes our potential for well-being.

Chicken Hummus Naan Wraps

INGREDIENTS:

For The Wraps:

  • 4 pieces of naan bread
  • 1 cup of roasted red pepper hummus
  • 4 cups of organic spring mix
  • 3 cups of shredded cooked chicken (rotisserie chicken)
  • 2 cups of the veggie mixture with dressing (see below for recipe)
  • 4 tablespoons of full-fat feta cheese or goat cheese
  • For garnish (added to each wrap):
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of extra vinaigrette or juice from the veggies
  • Sea salt & black pepper, to taste
  • Drizzle of extra virgin olive oil

For The Veggie Mixture:

  • 1/2 cup of peeled, sliced & quartered cucumber
  • 1 cup of quartered cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup of peeled & diced red onion
  • 1/4-1/3 cup of red wine vinaigrette

INSTRUCTIONS:

How to cook Chicken Hummus Naan Wraps

  1. Turn on your oven’s LOW broil setting and pop the naan bread pieces onto the middle rack. Warm & slightly toast each side for about 3-5 minutes, keeping an eye on them so they don’t get too dark (I always set a timer). Alternately, you can warm the naan bread in a skillet on the stove or in a toaster oven if you don’t want to turn on your oven.
  2. Meanwhile, prep the cucumber, tomatoes, and red onion and add the chopped veggies to a medium-sized bowl. Pour vinaigrette over the veggie mixture and toss the vegetables until they’re well coated.
  3. Lay the naan bread pieces on a cutting board or baking sheet with the inside facing up (the side that’s less charred).
  4. Prepare each naan wrap as follows: Spread 1/4 cup of hummus across the whole surface, place 1 cup of spring mix on half the naan, then the cooked shredded chicken on the other half. Scoop 1/2 cup of the veggie mixture on top of the salad mix (this helps to absorb a bit of the dressing), then crumble 1 tablespoon of feta cheese over the veggies.
  5. Garnish each chicken wrap by pouring an extra tablespoon of red wine vinaigrette or juice from the bottom of the veggie bowl over the whole wrap, followed by sea salt & cracked black pepper (to taste) and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
  6. Serve immediately while still flat.
